Activity 3: Exploring Compositional Balance with Shape
Purpose
Compositional balance is achieved when the artist recognizes that shapes represent moments of force, and that these moments or attractions counterbalance one another.
Materials:
Drawing materials: pencil, ink, crayon, and paper.
Method:
Balance and counterbalance several geometric shapes within the boundaries of a picture frame. Consider these shapes as forces that support one another in controlled tension. Add value and color to the shapes to create interest. Remember that changes of color, value, and texture, as well as size and variety can affect visual weight and tension.
